On the road again

A couple of views of the magnificent Gateway Arch located on the banks of the Mississippi in St Louis.
Built between 1963 and 1965 to rejuvinate a run down area of St Louis, this structure is truly awesome.
At 192m tall it's the tallest man-made national monument in the US.
Inside it has a "tram" which takes passengers up and over, where you can view the city and river from port-holes at the top of the arch.
An to think they made all the calculations manually. No CAD or computers for these architects.

So onto Leg 2 of my Nuffield travels.
During this trip I will be looking closely at the US Farmers and Ranchers Alliance to try and understand how they have succeeded in getting upto 30 national and regional agricultural organisations to buy into a single PR agenda. These guys are two steps ahead of us in this regard in that they have formed a legal entity to manage the public relations for the industry as well as raising funds from partners and engaging with a PR agency and management company to run the day to day operation.
Lots to learn.
So I'm going to be driving around Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska speaking with the key people involved in this initiative. One key point to note is that most of them are large-scale farmers in their own right.
It's now Spring planting time in the corn-belt, so I'm looking forward to driving some big kit and helping with the planting while I'm at the various farms.

  1. It is quite amazing that all these groups have been able to come together. I wonder though even though pooling resources is supposed to be more efficient, if that will be the case here. I am hoping for lots of sunshine so that planting can begin in the Midwest. The sunshine over the weekend should help.
